ABOUT SHRM

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is a US based professional body with over 300,000 HR and business executive members in 165 countries. It is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management, offering training and qualification in Human Resource Management and related subjects to enhance the business competencies of HR leaders to better support the business in managing its people.

SHRM certification is globally recognized and highly valued because those who earn it must demonstrate not only knowledge but how to apply that knowledge in scenarios modeled on real-life occurrences involving HR professionals. According to SHRM, 73% of exam-takers surveyed said the exam questions were relevant to contemporary experiences. The exams are researched using global employers and business leaders, so the credentials reflect the skills and knowledge needed to be a leader in the HR field.

The benefits of SHRM certification for HR professionals include:

  • A boost in confidence and recognition
  • Exhibiting mastery of competencies and knowledge that organizations find most important
  • Expanding your scope within the HR field
  • Bringing new ideas to your organization
  • Standing out from other jobseekers
  • Showing commitment to the HR profession
  • Protecting your organization by ensuring regulatory compliance

  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they devoted at least 1,000 hours to HR-related activities in any calendar year to qualify as having a year of HR-related experience. More than 1,000 hours in a calendar year does not equate to more than 1 year of experience.

  • Individuals who have mixed roles—for example, office managers who have both administrative and HR responsibilities—may also have qualifying experience, so long HR-related duties total at least 1,000 hours in a calendar year. Supervising employees in and of itself is not considered qualifying HR-related experience.
  • Experience may be either exempt or non-exempt.
  • Individuals who are HR consultants may demonstrate qualifying experience through the HR-related duties they perform for their clients. Contracted hours must total at least 1,000 hours in a calendar year.
